The Family Access Program: Breaking Barriers to Early Learning

Every family deserves access to high-quality child care, but we know that for many in our community, the path to finding it is filled with obstacles.

The Family Access Program was launched to bridge the gap between families and the early learning systems they depend on. By listening directly to the experts—parents and caregivers—we are working to build a more equitable and accessible future for Washington’s children.

What We’ve Learned

In our first year, we focused on deep community engagement across our region, including dedicated listening sessions in Grays Harbor County. Through these direct connections with 24 local caregivers, we identified the primary hurdles families face:

  • High Costs: The rising price of child care remains the top barrier for many families.
  • Limited Availability: Finding an open spot in a quality program is a significant challenge.
  • Transportation: Geographic and logistical barriers often prevent families from accessing available care.
  • System Fragmentation: There is a vital need for more coordinated, easy-to-navigate systems of support.

Turning Insight Into Impact

These findings didn’t just stay in the room—they are driving real change. The feedback gathered from our community contributed to a statewide report designed to guide policy and system improvements across Washington’s early learning landscape.
